about

What was that behind me?
What was that sound?

lyrics

My car stalled out in the middle of the night, last Sunday night in October. I was on Route 65, about 9 miles from town in a pretty desolate patch of road, fringed on either side by foggy marsh only a little bit visible under the starlight and the disappearing moonlight. It was nearly completely dark. It felt completely dark. I knew there was a gas station about four miles ahead, so I locked the car and started walking. I’d only been walking about ten minutes when I could have sworn I heard faint footsteps behind me. Almost close, too. The only thing I’d been hearing before that moment was my own thoughts and the wind. My pulse started to quicken and I walked faster, following the white line on the side of the road. The footsteps behind me seemed to slow down a bit, but they never completely disappeared.

I was just beginning to think I’d earned a sense of relief when I noticed that I was hearing the footsteps again, this time more than one set of footsteps behind me. And then I heard the moaning. I’d never believed in ghosts or zombies, but I also knew I was not imagining this!

I walked faster, nearly running, but the horrible moan of whatever that thing (or things) behind me kept up, like whatever it was could sense that I was prey and that it wanted to rip my skin right off of my bones! I didn’t want to break into actual running though, for fear that I’d be overtaken...
