about

So, I got assigned this track to cover as a part of the 2019 Great Cover Song Challenge by Worcester, Massachusetts writer, reporter and poet Victor Infante. The idea was you'd put a work of your own into the ring (to be assigned as a cover challenge to another artist), and you would also agree (if you were brave enough) to cover a song by another artist. I offered up a poem of mine, and in turn I was assigned this song "Ego Chatter" by Suburban Behemoth (aka Paul Vigeant). I really liked the vibe of Paul's work and lyrics. It had a very old-school Worcester feel to it that really took me back some to my old performance-art roots. I decided to go with something more ethereal but driving my approach. I also liked that Paul had some kind of vocal distortion thing happening on his original track, so in tribute I chose to go way out of my comfort zone with this and just recorded my vocal with the microphone on my Android phone, so some of the distortion and "dirtyness" of the vocal is intentional. Listen to this one if you can with headphones, folks, as I did a bit of subliminal stuff in there.

Enjoy,

Rich Boucher

Ego Chatter
by Suburban Behemoth
Lyrics by Paul Vigeant

When I wake up in the morning and you're not there...
It cuts me to the quick.
(I miss the warmth of your body...your smile as you lay beside me.)
And I shake all of the cobwebs that are in my head...
But it doesn't do the trick.
(The jokes we made over coffee... I was late 'cause you wouldn't get off me.)

Shades drawn and quartered, I'm alone.
No one is calling on the phone.
Don't look at me, I'm such a mess.
It's what I do and don't confess.

Take a deep breath of the summer air...
The heat clings to my chest.
(We kissed in the rain over summer...your lips always wanted to linger.)
[]...Of deep despair.
I always do what I know best.
(I know it's the end of our story... you left before you could bore me.)

Nobody asked for your opinion.
This tyranny, the fool's dominion.
Make up your mind while you still have one.
Nothing to do when all is said and done.

When I wake up in the morning and you're not there...
It cuts me to the quick.
And I shake all of the cobwebs that are in my head...
But it doesn't do the trick.
(I miss the warmth of your body...your smile as you lay beside me.)
